Jetstar passenger ‘claimed to have AK-47 assault rifle’

March 27, 2014 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59A man on a Jetstar night flight from Melbourne to Christchurch allegedly claimed he was carrying an AK-47 assault rifle in a bag and threatened to break one of the aircraft’s windows.

Police met the man, an Australian in his 30s, at Christchurch airport, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Unsurprisingly, the man was said to be drunk. A passenger told the Herald the man was drunk and obnoxious from the start of the flight. Things took a sudden turn for the worse when he decided to light up a cigarette.Dusit-Hot-Deals-Banner-250x250-06

When told to put it out, the man demanded to be let off the plane, which was by then flying over the Tasman Sea at about 35,000 feet. He threatened to break a window if the flight crew did not let him out there and then, the paper reported.

According to the report, a flight attendant confiscated the man’s cigarette lighter and asked if he was carrying any contraband.

The man allegedly replied: “Yeah, take the bag. It’s got an AK-47 in there.” The AK-47 is a renowned Russian-designed assault rifle.

Another man sat next to the drunken passenger to keep him relatively calm until the flight landed and police boarded. Passengers had to wait until police escorted the drunk off the plane before they could leave.

Jetstar spokesman Stephen Moynihan confirmed to the paper that a “disruptive passenger” had flown on flight JQ171 from Melbourne to Christchurch on March 24.

“Our crew handled the incident on board, police met the passenger upon arrival in Christchurch, and the matter is now with the police. Jetstar does not tolerate anti-social behaviour.”
