Jetstar to South Africa? Qantas seek permission

January 19, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Qantas has applied to the  International Air Services Commission (IASC) seeking to renew seven frequencies of capacity per week in each direction on the South Africa route.

Qantas also seeks to include, in the renewal determination, a condition permitting the capacity to be used by another Australian carrier “which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qantas, such as Jetstar”.

The application doesn’t necessarily mean that Jetstar will link Australia to South Africa. It’s a contingency that Qantas wants to cover. Then again, the fact Jetstar has gained a mention indicates that it is at least being considered.

It’s technically possible. The flight distance from Perth to Johannesburg is 8325 kilometres. The flight distance from Sydney to Johannesburg is 11,058 kilometres. The range of the B787-8 Dreamliner, which Jetstar flies, is 13,621 kilometres.

In accordance with sections 12 and 17 of the International Air Services Commission Act 1992, the IASC has invited other applications for capacity on the route. So if Virgin Australia, just for instance, wants to give it a go, it has until the end of this month to apply.

Current determinations allocating capacity will expire in the next 12 months.

The Qantas letter to the IASC states: “For flexibility, the capacity is also sought for use by another Australian carrier which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qantas, such as Jetstar.

“We therefore seek to renew the Determination subject to the following conditions:

  • the capacity may be utilised by Qantas or another Australian carrier which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qantas; and
  • the capacity may be used by Qantas to provide joint services with any wholly-owned subsidiary and by any wholly-owned subsidiary of the Qantas Group to provide joint services with Qantas.”
