Jetstar’s friendly tip-off to drug-carrying pax falls flat

August 1, 2014 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59Jetstar has apologised after a “casually employed crew member” serving as a flight attendant gave passengers who may have been carrying drugs a friendly tip-off to flush their stashes away before sniffer dogs checked them at the airport.

The cheery staffer told a planeload of mainly young passengers returning to Sydney from the Splendour in the Grass music festival in Byron Bay that sniffer dogs and quarantine officers were waiting in the domestic terminal – so get rid of anything incriminating.

Reports say this advice produced a sudden queue for the toilets – and some of those waiting were holding suspicious items in their hands.

Splendour in the Grass strictly prohibits “possession, sale or use of illicit drugs or substances” and states that “any persons found with them in their possession will be subject to police action and will be evicted from the festival”.  It doesn’t allow alcohol to be brought into the festival area or day carparks either and it subjects patrons to bag searches.

As always, however, a few festivalgoers break the rules. Not every passenger on the late-night Gold Coast to Sydney flight approved of the airline giving drug carriers a tip-off to help them escape the consequences of breaking the law.

Questioned by Sydney’s Daily Telegraph about the incident, Jetstar said the cabin crew member involved was delivering a mandatory quarantine announcement and had decided to add his own touch.

The words were “poorly chosen and are plainly at odds with the professional standards we’d expect from our team,” the airline said. He can expect a reprimand.
