The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, one of the region’s foremost public golfing establishments, has joined the Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF).
Created as a community project between the Hong Kong Government and The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the 54-hole facility was built to meet the growing demand for golf in the region.
Cameron Halliday, the club’s General Manager, said: “Since its opening almost 23 years ago, the mission at Kau Sai Chau has been to promote golf to the people of Hong Kong, and the growth of the game locally is testament to the success of the project.”
Located along the rugged coastline of Kau Sai Chau within the scenic port shelter area, the three 18-hole courses offer challenging golf in a spectacular setting with sweeping views of Sai Kung and the South China Sea.
The North and South courses were designed by South African great Gary Player while the East Course was sculpted by Nelson and Haworth Golf Course Architects, an Associate Business Member of the AGIF.
Set in the Sai Kung Peninsula on land that was formerly used by the British Army for shelling practice, Kau Sai Chau has become an environmental sanctuary. Golfers share its 250 hectares with eagles, egrets, and pond herons, as well as the occasional barking deer.
Kau Sai Chau has been recognised for its efforts in environmental stewardship through certification as the first ‘Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary for Wildlife’ in China and as the first Golf Environment Organisation certified facility in Asia Pacific.
In addition to the three golf courses, Kau Sai Chau offers superb golf instruction and facilities including a 60-bay floodlit driving range and short game practice area, a golf shop, and catering facilities that make it an ideal place for organising corporate or society events.
Opened in mid-December 1995, the only public course in Hong Kong is an independent company managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club on behalf of the Government.
Eric Lynge, the AGIF’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Federation is delighted to welcome Kau Sai Chau as a Golf Course Facility Member.
“For more than 20 years, Kau Sai Chau has been at the forefront of promoting golf in Hong Kong. Beyond that, it is viewed by many as an ideal model for public courses, which Asia is crying out for.
“We were honoured to have Mike Carey (KSC’s Head of Golf Operations) and Christine Chan Wai-yee (KSC’s Golf Course Superintendent) share their knowledge and experiences with industry peers as keynote presenters at last month’s Philippines Golf Course Management Conference. Their insight was invaluable.”
Carey said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the Philippines event and we were very impressed with the co-ordination, attendance and information coming out of the conference. We are looking forward to further attendance and involvement in future AGIF events.”
