JOURNEY OF 10,000 MILES IN TWO DECADES: MANDARA SPA CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF PIONEERING A MULTI-CULTURAL SPA EXPERIENCE
Born in Indonesia and an exotic import of the United States, Mandara Spa, a division of global spa provider Steiner Leisure Limited, marks a milestone: 20 years of excellence in refinement, indulgence and beauty. More than 10,000 miles apart (10,862), the Mandara Spa brand has grown from its first spa opening in Bali in 1996 to corporate offices in Malaysia and Coral Gables, globalizing its 42 spa footprint in four continents, 22 cities, two cruise ships as well as the signature Mandara Spa product brand.
For the past two decades, the Mandara Spa brand has become a staple for upscale hotels and resorts worldwide. With a distinctive spa experience that reflects the company’s origins on the stunningly beautiful island of Bali, Mandara Spa is a celebration of Balinese heritage and tradition melded into local cultures, creating a brand that captures the essence of natural beauty; a warmth of hospitality; an authenticity of service; and an awareness of inner peace and tranquility that is readily available in the East and sought after so passionately in the West.
Veteran spa executive, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mandara Spa Asia Limited, Jeff Matthews, a driving force behind the brand, has been an integral part since its inception and has witnessed the transformation to a world-class operation that stays true to its core while infusing regional influences that enhance each spa community. The result: a modern-day, yet traditional spa concept; a brand that is timeless, but also cutting-edge; a spa product that fits in to every destination and hotel brand; a reason to celebrate.
“Celebrations are a wellspring of life and a benchmark of longevity,” said Matthews. “This anniversary season we will share our heritage along with our traditions and timehonored secrets through a series of year-long special offers, seminars, classes, a charitable program, and a world tour anchored by an authentic Balinese healer. Turning 20, the Mandara Spa brand is youthful, accomplished, and has staying power. Twenty has never looked better on any spa brand.”
Thomas Gottlieb, visionary and founder of Mandara Spa, echoes Matthews’ sentiments. These former team members were at the forefront of launching the brand for six years prior to Steiner Leisure acquiring it 14 years ago.
“This celebration is about a dream and a dream team. A spa brand conceived in a dining room in Batu Jimbar and a global spa industry leader that nurtured it to the phenomenal concept it is today. The dream is now being celebrated. May Mandara Spa continue on its journey.”
Every brand has its story. Mandara Spa’s narrative is one of world travel, local influences, indigenous experiences, and the ultimate indulgence. But mostly, it embodies a spirituality that is unique to every person when they embrace a Mandara moment
From the first Namaste and inauguration of the spa brand on May 16, 1996 at The Chedi (now Alila Ubud) in Ubud, Bali, Mandara’s journey is the translation of a culture so genuine that it is welcomed in all corners of the world.
Inspired by the beautiful tradition of healing touches which is deeply immersed in the Balinese culture and passed on from mother to daughter, from father to son, from generation to generation, this brand takes the spiritual riches and customs of an island paradise and combines it with European methods and regional influences, encompassing well-being from around the world.
From Bali to Japan, Moscow to London, the Bahamas to Guam, and Las Vegas to Hawaii as well as at sea, Mandara Spas are found in metropolitan and cosmopolitan cities, islands and destinations worldwide. Our hotel partners include: Atlantis, Caesar’s Entertainment, Disneyland Resort, H Dubai, Hilton Hotels and Resorts, Loews Hotels and Resorts, Lotte Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels and Resorts, Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London, Penn National Gaming, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Westin Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, and independent properties in four continents.
Where East Meets West
There’s a mystery about a brand that can remain true to tradition while charting a path to a more modern lifestyle. When the Mandara Spa brand began to transform, it erased the lines that bound it to what it was perceived to be – an Asian spa; these boundaries ceased to exist. Instead beauty, nature, science, practicality and peace are all entwined to offer a luxurious spa experience of traditional treatments from Indonesia, India and Thailand with some the latest health and beauty trends from Europe and the Americas.
Mandara has traveled far from its roots while still maintaining a strong connection to its heritage. Advanced body and facial treatments are as equal on any spa menu to the Balinese-inspired services that stretch from the South Pacific Islands to the Far East and across to the Americas and the Caribbean.
“Our guests and partners in the western hemisphere have graciously embraced the Mandara brand,” said Jesus Padilla, vice president, Mandara Spa. “Whether it is because of our heritage or culture, the beauty it embodies, its subtle sophistication, or the inclusion of other ideas and local customs in our brand, Mandara Spa has made a lasting impression in its journey of more than 10,000 miles.”
In spite of the distance traveled, the mosaic of offerings, and the growth of the brand, one of Mandara’s most significant accomplishments has been fusing Eastern and Western philosophies.
The Legend: Aging Agelessly
Twenty is still considered young for a brand. But in an era where today’s trend is tomorrow’s old news, there is inspiration in “aging agelessly” and being able to stand the test of time.
The name Mandara comes from a Sanskrit legend about the god’s quest to find the secret to eternal youth and beauty. In the legend, Mandara is a mythical mountain that churns the seas and unearths the water of life. The legend tells of destruction and ultimate renewal as the magical water eventually springs from deep within the majestic Mount Mandara.
Mandara Spa has embraced this legend. While Mandara Spa does not promise immortality, each spa experience encapsulates some of the magic and sublime mystery of the legend from which it takes its name – and experience that promises to relax, revitalize, and enchant.
Meditate. Spa. Love.
When a captivating island and its people become the focus an international film, the secret is revealed. The world has come to see the beauty of the Balinese culture within the last decade thanks to the movie “Eat. Pray. Love.”, but Mandara Spa was fortunate to discover this precious treasure a decade prior.
To celebrate 20 years of Mandara Spa, the brand has launched a world tour featuring an authentic Balinese healer. While travel to Bali has increased exponentially, Mandara’s 20th anniversary gift is to bring Bali and Balinese healing to the world.
Healer Guru Made Sumantra was born in the village of Banjar Payogan, Ubud, Bali where the Mandara Spa brand originated and grew up in a family of traditional Balinese Shaman healers (Balian). Guru Made Sumantra will tour six countries in a span of four months to introduce energy and yoga healing. The tour schedule is as follows:
