June 2016 YTD U.S. – International Air Passenger Traffic up Six Percent

International air traffic to/from the U.S. (1) totaled 106.5 million passengers through June 2016, a six percent increase over the first half of 2015.

U.S. citizen travel (49.8 million) was up nine percent and composed 47 percent of all air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (56.7 million) increased by three percent with their market share decreasing to 53 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 52.9 million passengers, up three percent, however their share slipped to below 50 percent. Foreign flags carried 49.4 million passengers, up nine percent from 2015.

The following, overseas, Canada and Mexico regions are ‘breakouts’ of international:

Overseas air traffic accounted for 77.9 million passengers, 73 percent of all international, and grew by six percent.

U.S. citizen travel (35.8 million) was up seven percent composing 46 percent of overseas air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (42.1 million) were up by six percent with market share at 54 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 36.9 million passengers, up three percent, but their share dropping to 47 percent. Foreign flags carried 41.0 million passengers, up 10 percent from June 2015 YTD.

Estimated capacity (383,990 seats) on non-stop flights from PRC was up 18.6 percent year-over-year not keeping pace with overall inbound passenger growth of 21.5 percent.

Chinese carriers increased average weekly frequencies from 133 to 173*, up 30 percent.
U.S. carriers increased average weekly frequencies from 130 to 138, up six percent.
(*Note: maximum round trip weekly frequencies, for each side, is 171 (Zones 1 and 2)

North American markets accounted for 27 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.

Mexico air traffic accounted for 14.5 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, and was up nine percent.

U.S. citizen travel (9.9 million) increased 13 percent and composed 68 percent of air traffic. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (4.6 million) transiting through Mexico, increased by almost one percent, and market share dropped to 32 percent.

U.S. flags carried 10.7 million passengers, up nine percent from last year, but their share remained at 74 percent. Foreign flags carried 3.7 million passengers, up nine percent and share remained at 26 percent.

Canadian air traffic accounted for 14.2 million passengers, 13 percent of all international traffic, and showed no growth.

U.S. citizen travel (4.1 million) increased 13 percent and grew to 29 percent of air traffic. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (10.1 million), decreased by four percent. Market share declined to 71 percent.

U.S. flags carried 5.3 million passengers, down six percent from last year, and their share dropped to 37 percent. Foreign flags carried 8.9 million passengers, up four percent.
