Kenyans Geoffrey BIrgen and Cynthia Chelangat Towett took out the men’s and women’s races at the Supersports 10 Miles International Run 2015 Phuket at Thanyapura Phuket, with the locals having plenty to cheer about after Thais collected three medals.

This unique race start and finish in the impressive sports stadium of Thanyapura.

The 22 March event was marked by ex-Formula One world champion Jenson Button preparing for the gruelling Malaysian Grand Prix on 29 March with a 10th place overall finish for third place in the 30-39 age group.

But it was Birgen, 31, and Chelangat Towett, 26, who had the most to smile about, clocking 50min 10sec and 1hr 1min 55sec respectively.

Kenyan Paul Kimani Wambui, 28, was second in the men’s race in 52:09 followed by Thai Boonthung Srisung, 34, in 53:01.

Thais Natthaya Thanaronnawat and New York-born Jan Vongvorachoti finished second and third in the women’s race in 1:02.07 and 01:02.39.

Another Thai, Nattawut Innum, finished fifth in the men’s race (55:20).

The was the first time the annual event was held outside Bangkok. Thanyapura Phuket was chosen to host it based on its status as one of Asia’s leading sports training, health and educational facilities with a history of staging elite events.

“It was an honour to host the Supersports 10 Miles International Run and welcome some of the world’s premier distance runners,” said Mr Philipp Graf von Hardenberg, Thanyapura Phuket President and Chief Executive Officer. “We could not be happier with how the event unfolded. It shone a very positive light on Thanyapura and Phuket.”

Narong Thiemmek, a senior official at the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, said the local entrants he spoke to had described it as the best ever race on the resort island. Narong gave the event 100 out of 100, labelling it ‘perfect’.

Thanyapura is set on 23 hectares of pristine land near Phuket International Airport and the island’s famed beaches. It utilises a patented mind, body and soul coaching philosophy to get the best out of people, while it has assembled a team of world-class coaches, sports scientists, dieticians, physiotherapists and chiropractors.
