Internationally renowned artist Sarrita King will return to the far north next month for three days only from July 4-6 during a special artist in residence program at Ngarru Gallery.

Ngarru Gallery co-owner Roberta Mazur said it was a real honour to have someone of King’s experience paint in residence at the gallery, which was established in 2010 to showcase contemporary Indigenous art.

This will be the second year King has taken part in the program, and Ms Mazur believed interest in the young artist was stronger than ever.

“Her work has recently been given fantastic exposure by featuring on the television series The Block, All Stars, so many visitors to the region will be aware of her and interested in this event,” Ms Mazur said.

“While she is at the gallery, people will be able to come and watch her iconic works come to life, as well as have the opportunity to meet with her.”

Ms Mazur described King as the “elite” of younger generation art, who together with her sister Tarisse, have taken the world by storm exhibiting extentensively in Australia, as well as Europe and the US.

Born in 1988, Sarrita is from the Gurindji people and her father, William King Jungala, was a well-established artist.

“With Sarrita’s father William King passing away so young, Sarrita is one of the first modern examples of a younger generation artist coming through.”

The inspiration behind her art is her home state of the Northern Territory and her experiences with family members who taught her about her Aboriginal heritage and the connection to the world.

Visitors to the gallery will have the opportunity to see King each day from the Thursday to the Saturday. Ngarru Gallery is located at 1-2, 31 Macrossan Street, Port Douglas.
