Kingdom Property Racing has triumphed in the Coronation Cup at the 10th Top of the Gulf Regatta in Pattaya, which sees one-design Platu class yachts race against each other in the signature event at Asia’s largest multi-class sailing occasion.

Skippered by Australian Scott Duncanson, Kingdom Property squeezed home by just one point on the final day of the seven-race event in a thrilling fight to the end with Chris Way’s Easy Tiger IV second and Team Viewpoint led by Rolf Heemskerk of the Netherlands third.

The Coronation Cup is a highly prestigious event due to its association with the anniversary of His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej’s ascension to the throne in Thailand on May 5 and this year had a distinctly international flavor with a total of 14 entries from nine countries including Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the UK.

Kingdom Property Chief Executive Officer Nigel Cornick said: “I have been involved in sailing for a over a decade in Thailand with the King’s Cup in Phuket and Top of the Gulf in Pattaya and this has been the most exciting conclusion to any race so far.”

“Huge congratulations to Scott and his team. They have raced hard and competitively and we are absolutely delighted to come out on top. The conditions have not been easy and the conclusion could not have been better,” he said.

“It is a credit to the organisers to put on such a strong and professionally run five-day event and I hope this will further create recognition for Pattaya as an outstanding destination for sailing in Asia. We will certainly be back next year to defend the trophy.”

The race is unique as competitors race one-design, 7.5 metre long yachts known as the Platu 25 class, specifically designed for Thailand by world-renowned yacht designer Bruce Farr in the mid-1990s. The name was borrowed from the very popular small Thai fish, pla-to, eaten locally with nam prik, a very spicy chili paste. Platu competitions can now be found in Europe and other countries around the world.

With margins of just a few seconds separating the identically designed yachts it was a thrill for the veteran Phuket-based yachtsman Mr Duncanson, who has won the competition on three previous occasions, to pit his wits against such as strong field.

“It was an amazing race. The winds were difficult and it was very tactical right up to the end. I love this class. It has an identity and individualism all of its own and it has been a pleasure to work with Kingdom Property Racing,” he said. “It has been a dream come true to refit the boat including new paint, mast, rigging, sails and instruments. We were putting the final touches to it just hours before the race so to be so competitive is fantastic. It’s a great testament to the team. Well done boys!”

With 239 boats and over 600 sailors from more than 30 countries, Top of the Gulf Regatta is the largest multi-class sailing event in Asia. The royally affiliated regatta is held annually at Ocean Marina, Jomtien, in celebration of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne.

Kingdom Property has a history of supporting sailing in Thailand, through the King’s Cup and the Top of the Guld Regatta, as well as through junior sailing programmes at Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya and Kamolwan ‘Bam’ Chanyim, who is bidding to represent Thailand at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Kingdom Property is the developer behind Southpoint Pattaya. Set on an elevated four-rai freehold plot on Pratumnak Hill, a short distance south of Bali Hai in Pattaya City, is offers extensive sea views, with unit sizes start at 30sqm studios, with one-bedroom units ranging from 41sqm-87sqm and two-bedroom units 61sqm-97sqm.
