Kites and Culinary – worldwide festivals in late summer

Whether you are looking for wine festivals, medieval or culinary markets, or just want to fly a kite: The numbers of festivities in late summer are the perfect opportunity to explore different activities. Green Pearls® kept an eye out for festivals in Bali, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Flying a kite on Bali

Starting in July, the Bali kite festival turns the sky above the island into a sea of colorful kites. Not only children are welcome to have fun here, a lot of adults come around to fly a kite in summer. But it’s not just a hobby: on Bali the people believe that kites are a connection to the sky and letting them fly is a symbol to thank the gods. Between July and October visitors are able to also watch a variety of competitions. The beach of Bali’s Puri Dajuma offers the perfect wind conditions for kite flying. For this reason, children from the village practice and improve their skills over the course of summer to compete in one of the contests and are happy about joining guests.

Wine festival in the town of Bernkastel-Kues next to the Mosel River

At the end of August the wine festival in Bernkastel-Kues starts with an evening of wine tasting. Visitors can buy small amounts of wines on the festival’s “wine street” and of course taste the different types. All guests who come dressed in local attire of the Mosel region are rewarded with a “sweet temptation” and participate in a raffle. Further, another highlight is the annual parade as well as live music and the reception of the “Mosella”, the local queen of wine in the Mosel area. After visiting the town’s wine fest, guests can relax in the spa of theVital- & Wellnesshotel Zum Kurfürsten that lies close by. A large range of spa treatments, massages, traditional Chinese medicine and a trip to the surrounding vineyards are guaranteed to ensure relaxation.

“Heugabelfest” in Innichen, Tirol

In the town of Innichen in South Tyrol, the Pustertal alpine farmers are in the center of attention every September. When the so-called “Heugabel” days take place, culinary specialties are scheduled every week. Locally produced goods from famers and craftsmen as well as the sale of the products are combined with the culinary offerings of the Innichen food service industry. Moreover the specialty weeks provide the opportunity to visit a bee keeper or a local cheese factory in Toblach to see how cheese is produced or learn the process of making delicious “Speckknödel”, a type of bacon dumpling. When looking for a place to stay during the “Heugabel” days, the hotel Leitlhof in the town of Innichen is a perfect choice and also makes for an excellent starting point for potential tours.

Orange fall in Hofgut Hafnerleiten

Hosted by the hotel Hofgut Hafnerleiten, Bad Birnbach celebrates the “fall in orange” on October 6th. Everything fall has to offer is brought together in a delicious dinner menu. In addition, a liquor tasting with Andreas Franzl, from the Oberkorb distillery, is offered to the guests where they are able to taste the different German schnapses made from fruit and berries, some of them have become very uncommon over time, such as guelder rose or medlar.

Fall festival on the castle “Schloss Wartegg”

Guests of the fall festival in Schloss Wartegg feel like they went back in time. A market in the castle takes place on October 1st and features about 20 exhibitors that offer organic wines, freshly caught fish from Lake Constance, homemade confit and many more gourmand specialties. Likewise, the kitchen on Schloss Wartegg takes care of the guests’ culinary wellbeing and offers a variety of delicious treats, while using ingredients from the castle’s own garden, ProSpecie. Besides culinary goods, a lot of art, in the form of jewelry, hand crafted goods, ceramics and natural beauty products can be discovered here. Especially the jugglers and street artists set the mood of the festival and evoke the feeling of a renaissance fair.
