July 13, 2013 DESTINATION No Comments Email Email

The Edgewater Resort & Spa, considered to be the Home of Sport in the Cook Islands, jumped at the opportunity to get in behind the organisers of the Cook Islands very own Kite Surfing Event – The 2013 Manureva International Kitesurfing Competition held on the beautiful lagoon of Aitutaki from 10-14 June.

The Edgewater hosted international Kiwi woman rider, Anderson Romero and Luke Thompson in their own Beachfront Deluxe suites that provided the pair with plenty of space plus the comforts of home, and stunning views of the lagoon and sunset.

The duo spent their first night in Rarotonga before joining around 28 local and international competitors in Aitutaki.  The event also attracted international celebrity riders such as current Asia KTA champion, Narapichit Tudla of Thailand as well as keen kite surfers from Tahiti.

Event organiser – Cook Islands Kitesurfing Association president, Paka Worthington says that “this Aitutaki event is more than just a Kite Surfing Competition. It is a celebration of one of the worlds’ most beautiful lagoons, where its beauty is only surpassed by the warmth and hospitality of its people. Manureva Kite Surfing is about celebrating a great sport in a place that is rich in culture and charm.”

The week long event was combined with local activity including a night market prize giving event that saw residents sell local delights and produce and a great display of local entertainment and cultural performances.  The highlight of the evening was of course the announcement of the 2013 champions that saw Tudla take out the overall men’s section followed by local heroes Evaraima Koteka and Pauro Arnold placing second and third overall in the men’s division. Kathrin Borgwardt of Germany took out the overall women’s champion title with Romero taking second place.

The Edgewater Resort & Spa in partnership with Air Rarotonga and selected hotels and resorts on Aitutaki will be releasing a series of combo packages to provide international Kite Surfers with an easy transition between Rarotonga and Aitutaki and vice versa.
