The blaze, which has been blamed on a lithium-ion battery, happened at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport as the aircraft was taxiing to its gate.

A passenger aboard took a photo of the incident and shared it on Twitter.

The passenger tweeted that the fire was caused by a battery inside another passenger’s hand luggage.

“Well done @KLM for calm management of cabin fire on flight KL 875 caused by a battery in passenger’s carry-on luggage,” she tweeted.

Lithium-ion batteries, used to power all sorts of handheld portable devices, have a reputation for very occasionally overheating and bursting into flame.

Like many airlines, KLM permits loose lithium batteries, such as rechargeable lithium batteries and AA lithium batteries for laptops and DVD players, to be carried in hand baggage (and only in hand baggage).

Carrying lithium ion batteries in the hold is another matter. Earlier this month, United Airlines joined Delta Airlines in refusing to carry bulk consignments of lithium-ion batteries, on safety grounds.

Aviation experts believe lithium-ion batteries caused or contributed to fires that destroyed two B747 cargo planes, killing all four crew members, in recent years.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared with 239 people aboard in March last year, was reported to have been carrying 221 kilograms, or over one-fifth of a tonne, of lithium-ion batteries in its cargo hold.
