Korean Air is driving a major organizational strategy by investing KRW 200 billion over the next 10 years to overhaul its entire IT infrastructure.

Under the agreement, Korean Air plans to migrate all their applications and data to AWS Cloud over the next 3 years, including the entire set of websites, cargo management system, flight Control system, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and other systems, which are currently operating under Korean Air’s datacenter in Banghwa-dong, Seoul.

Along with the migration, Korean Air will adopt AWS to introduce digital innovation and transformation designed to help enhance customer experience, and boost operational efficiency, security, and scalability. To help achieve this vision, the company decided to migrate to the cloud, making it a first mover among major Korean enterprises and global full service airline carriers.

On November 6, Korean Air executives met with LG CNS to sign a Strategic Collaboration Agreement, which will enable Korean Air to use the breadth and depth of AWS services to innovate in the cloud. The meeting was attended by Walter Cho, President of Korean Air; Youngseob Kim, CEO of LG CNS; and Jungwook Jang, Country Manager of AWS Korea.

Walter Cho said, “Faced with increasingly fierce competition in the airline industry, we decided to move to AWS Cloud in order to lead innovative changes, and enhance the quality of our customer services. Leveraging cloud technologies means we will be able to provide faster and more efficient services that are tailored to the needs of our customers.”

LG CNS is one of the largest IT outsourcing service providers in Korea specializing in building and operating cloud systems. The company runs datacenters and disaster recovery centers with high levels of reliability. AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform, delivering a wide variety of cloud solutions to millions of customers around the world with cutting-edge technologies including big data and artificial intelligence (AI).

On the AWS Cloud, Korean Air will be able to leverage new technologies such as AI, machine learning, big data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and database management to render customized services based on individual preferences for passengers around the world.

For example, Korean Air aims to use big data analytics to understand customers’ flight information and their changing preferences to recommend optimal flight products quickly. A system will be developed to help predict customers’ future behavioral patterns and enable the company to develop new flight products accordingly. Furthermore, the company intends to help customers search for flight schedules and confirm reservations using voice-based interactive systems.

On the operations side, a new system will be designed to analyze big data from in-flight sensors and maintenance operations, which should contribute to optimizing flight routes, saving fuel, and enhancing predictive flight maintenance. In addition, AI technology will analyze system log files, which will contribute to flight safety and improve operational efficiency by automatically scaling up to deliver required resources when there are traffic spikes.

Using AWS, Korean Air will accelerate innovation in the era of digital transformation, and will continue to develop new services that aim to ensure high satisfaction for customers worldwide.
