Korean university students undertaking work experience with Cairns reef operators will be returning to their country to spread the word about the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef.

Passions of Paradise Sales and Marketing Manager Adam O’Malley said the company was working with the Cairns Korea Centre to educate their students about the Reef and the tourism industry.

“The students have been a pleasure to work with as they are well mannered and fully understand the importance of the hospitality industry,” he said.

“Unee Kim and Grace Seo have been doing work experience on board the Passions of Paradise catamaran for the past couple of weeks assisting with passengers and accompanying me on sales calls.

“As part of the program the students were able to dive and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef and will go back to their country as enthusiastic ambassadors for this World Heritage area.”

Cairns Korea Centre representative Dr Edward Kim, a Professor of Tourism Behaviour Management specialising Asian markets, said scholarships were given to seven Korean university students to come to Cairns for a four week course of intensive hospitality English at James Cook University.

“They are then placed with Great Barrier Reef tour operators full-time for four weeks to learn more about the tourism industry,” he said.

“I am delighted to see that the Cairns reef cruise companies are very supportive and cooperative in giving practical hands-on work experience which is very useful for the future careers of my Korean university students.

“More importantly, their work experience with Cairns reef cruise operators can promote Cairns tourism in Korea as they have been talking about it to family and friends via social networking services.

“When they return to Korea they will do a series of media interviews giving Cairns a great opportunity to be introduced as a friendly and beautiful place with the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.”
