La Crêperie, Brittany Crêpe & Galette Specialist, Extends Winning Recipe To Causeway Bay

unnamed (6)La Crêperie, the boutique French restaurant chain specialising in authentic Breton crêpes and galettes, is growing from strength to strength in Hong Kong, extending is winning recipe to Causeway Bay.  The group’s most prominent venue yet is now open on the 8th floor of the new L Square on Lockhart Road.

Though much more spacious, at 2,000 sq. ft., than its sister flagships in Sheung Wan and Wanchai, the new Causeway Bay branch retains all the maritime charm of Brittany that is key to the brand’s success.  Authentic Breton cuisine – which has proved a roaring success since the group’s founding in Shanghai in 2007 – likewise pays true homage to the shores of France’s remote north-west promontory.

Throughout the menu, La Crêperie’s growing popularity also owes much to authentic imported produce from France, along with fresh fruits and vegetables, cooked according to time-honoured tradition by chefs in show kitchens.

Named after its traditional crêpes, La Crêperie features the iconic dish for which Brittany is famous – both as whisper-tin pancake desserts and less familiar savoury buckwheat versions known as galettes.

To celebrate the new branch, the menu of beloved crêpes is complemented by several new specialties.  “Sexy Suzetteis an outrageously seductive summer celebration of legendary Crêpe Suzette with Mövenpick passion fruit and mango sorbet, lime juice, grilled almonds and flamed with Cointreau (HK$88).  Mademoiselle is another irresistible new fruity summer creation with fresh strawberry, blueberry and raspberry and Mövenpick vanilla ice cream and whipped cream (HK$68).

New gluten free buckwheat galettes of savouries topped with oozing baked egg are also introduced – alongside all-time favourites like La Piano packed to the brim with delicately smoked salmon and creamy spinach (HK$110), “La Gabier” with lobster, fish bisque and homemade tomato sauce (HK$138);and vegetarian La Brocéliande stuffed with two varieties of tangy goat’s cheese and walnuts, drizzled with honey (HK$98).

Among the new galettes, La Capitaine is a mariner’s seafood delight of pan-fried scallops and fondue of leek, bacon and cream, flamed with Jameson Irish Whisky (HK$128).  La Sarladaise is thin slices of pan-fried duck breast imported from Périgord with sweet Piment d’Espelette jelly chutney, eggand Emmental cheese (HK$138).

For smaller appetites, mini-galettes are also new on the menu, with ham, quail egg, Emmental cheese and 70% black truffle paste (HK$98 for 2 pieces).

While crêpes and galettes are the headliners, La Crêperie’s menu also embraces a selection of typical Brittany starters and mains – from mussels, oysters, seafood cassolette and lobster salad, to classic fish soup and Brittany rolls stuffed with beef and spinach.

This range of traditional specialties is also extended with the Causeway Bay opening – with exclusive dishes including “Pan-fried Foie Gras with Caramelised Apple, Apple Cider, and Salted Butter Caramel Sauce” (HK$98), “Hokkaido Scallops Carpaccio with Black Truffle Paste” (HK$98), and“Pan-Fried Duck Breast with Honey and Orange Sauce” (HK$108).

Against the backdrop of traditional Breton music, guests are transported to the friendly atmosphere of a little harbour café in Brittany, with a nautical theme of wooden tables, lighthouses on the tableware and sea paintings on the walls.

Though much more spacious, at 2,000 sq. ft., than its sister flagships in Sheung Wan and Wanchai, the new Causeway Bay branch retains all the maritime charm of Brittany that is key to the brand’s success.

“We are all about bringing the most typical food of Brittany, with authentic and original recipes exactly as you would discover if visiting our region of France,” says Mr Yann Blandford, the Chef Owner of La Crêperie who trained in Brittany. “But it is not only about enjoying our great specialties. We are also happy to introduce the Brittany region and its culture, as if you are escaping for the time you visit us.”

Authenticity even extends to the drinks list – headlined by the region’s celebrated artisanal apple ciders, which Yann insists are “the best match with our food!”

As well as the menu and décor, sailor uniforms for staff also pay homage to Brittany’s isolated and fiercely independent maritime roots.  Brittany retains its own Celtic customs, celebrations and even its own Breton language.  The region known as Finistère (lands end”) in French and Penn ar Bed (“head of the world”) in Breton has a fishing and seafaring tradition that continues to this day with a modern generation of round-the-world yachtsmen.

La Crêperie was recognised by influential travel website TripAdvisor with a Certificate of Excellence in 2014 and 2015, along with a special mention for its friendly service.  The brand is also kid-friendly, welcoming junior guests with colouring sheets and crayons, along with highchairs and ample pram parking.
