Largest Mahjong tournament set to kick off in Sydney this weekend

d390bb29-a29a-46b5-85fe-254c5b66a514The largest Mahjong tournament in the southern hemisphere, the 2016 Mahjong Masters will take place at The Star Sydney from Sunday, 10 – Tuesday, 12 April 2016.

Over 300 players from around the world will converge on The Star Event Centre to battle it out for their share in $100,000 AUD in prize money, with the winner set to take home $50,000 cash.

The Mahjong Masters will welcome Soichiro Suzuki, who won 2nd place in the 2016 World Series of Mahjong as he leads a strong team from Japan. Plus well known Hong Kong celebrity and CEO of Hong Thai Travel, Mr Jackie Wong will join the players. Mei Wong, the 2015 Mahjong Masters Grand Master will be back in the game, hoping to add another $50,000 to her winnings.

Hugh Fraser, General Manager of Gaming Operations at The Star Sydney is looking forward to welcoming players and spectators on Sunday.

“Mahjong is such an exciting game to be involved in and to watch so we are delighted to host this massive tournament. People of all ages and cultures can enjoy the camaraderie Mahjong brings, it requires a combination of skill, mental toughness and of course at times a little luck.

“We have 72 Mahjong tables and equal sets of Mahjong tiles ready for our players to participate, we can’t wait to see who will take out this years’ title as our Grand Master of the 2016 Mahjong Masters!” said Mr Fraser.
