Lateral thinking reveals cause of pax number anomaly

egtmedia59A Qatar Airways B777 takes off from Miami with 337 passengers aboard. When it lands there are 338 passengers aboard. Both counts are accurate. What has happened?

The only logical explanation occurred earlier this week: a woman gave birth on the flight.

The B777, heading for Qatar, was diverted to Gander International Airport in Newfoundland to make an emergency landing, the Toronto Star reported.

The paper quoted Brian Hicks, the airport’s safety manager, saying the airport received notification in the early hours (about 4.30am) that the plane needed to land.

The baby didn’t wait for landing and was born about 30 minutes before the plane touched down. Fortunately two doctors were aboard to assist with the delivery.

Hicks told the paper paramedics met the aircraft and whisked mother and baby to a nearby hospital.

Later reports said they were both doing well.
