One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) is proud to be the presenting sponsor of two upcoming book launch events, in Toronto and Ottawa, in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). Celebrate with producer, actor and author Michael Palin as he celebrates his newest book, Erebus: One Ship, Two Epic Voyages, and the Greatest Naval Mystery of All Time. The book chronicles the life of HMS Erebus, and her two great voyages to the Antarctic and later to the Arctic, where she disappeared along with her captain, the famed Sir John Franklin, and his crew.

The fate of the Erebus was a mystery that went unsolved for over 170 years until it was discovered in near perfect condition resting on the ocean floor in 2014. One Ocean Expeditions provided a vessel to support the search and was carrying Parks Canada’s ROV (remote operated vehicle) and their AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle). The AUV had a state-of-the-art sonar system that was deployed in order to scan the seabed in search of the Franklin vessel and was key in this incredible discovery.

Mr. Palin, a veteran comedian and adventurer, was welcomed aboard One Ocean Expeditions’ ship, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov in August 2017, seeking information and inspiration for his new book based on the vanishing of the legendary ship and its crew.

“I was lucky to get on this trip,” the author stated. “Such is the enthusiasm for all things Franklin that the ships are booked up a year in advance. Hearing of my interest rather late in the day, One Ocean Expeditions did all they could to squeeze me on board. Thank you to the captain, crew, on-board lecturers, tour organizers and fellow passengers on the One Ocean Expeditions ship, Akademik Sergey Vavilov.”

This is an exemplary illustration of a successful collaboration between The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) and One Ocean Expeditions. As exclusive marine travel partners in education, environmental science, and exploration, guests such as Michael Palin have an exclusive opportunity to learn from and interact with RCGS Fellows, including world-renowned scientists, educators, researchers, naturalists, marine biologists, artists, historians and photographers on board.

You can attend Michael Palin’s book launch events, sponsored by One Ocean Expeditions, at The Opera House in Toronto on Wednesday, October 17th or at The Royal Canadian Geographical Society in Ottawa on Friday, October 19th.
