Adventure Resorts and Cruises will this October launch the first-ever extended cruises on the beautiful Kerala Backwaters in southern India.

To mark the debut of the tropical, seven-night journeys aboard a traditional wooden, 18-passenger barge, a discount of 20 per cent is available for sailings from October, 2019, to April, 2020, with single travellers also able to explore Kerala’s labyrinth of palm-lined lakes, lagoons, canals, rivers and inlets without paying a solo supplement.

Adventure Resorts and Cruises will offer 36 seven-night sailings aboard the nine-cabin RV Vaikundam from Cochin to Alleppey and vice versa from October, 2019, to March, 2021.   The company also offers luxury cruises on the Brahmaputra River in north-east India.

“Our unique, new cruises will, for the first time, offer travellers a genuinely immersive cultural and natural journey through the Kerala Backwaters,” said Adventure Resorts and Cruises Managing Director, Sanjay Basu. “Described as the ‘Green Venice of the East’, the Backwaters were previously only open to travellers for a night or two on houseboats but our new, week-long cruises will offer an authentic, in-depth insight into the local life, traditions, and customs of these peaceful, coastal waterways.”

“Passengers aboard the new cruises will cruise past lush paddy fields and visit remote villages, temples. churches, spice markets, martial arts schools and ayurvedic medicine centres, meet traditional craftsmen and farmers and watch the school children, traders and fishermen who use the waterways in dugout canoes for daily commutes and trade. Guests will visit an elephant shelter, watch colourful dance displays and see how coir, or coconut fibre, is used to make products. The Backwaters lining the Arabian Sea coastline are also famous for spectacular orange sunsets.

The two-deck RV Vaikundam is modelled on a traditional rice barge and features nine air-conditioned cabins with ensuites and water views, a restaurant serving Indian and international cuisine, library, open lounge area and panoramic, sundeck for soaking in the ever-changing scenery.

Fares for the inaugural season of seven-night cruises from October, 2019, to April, 2020, on the Kerala Backwaters start at US$2170 per person, twin–share, or for solo passengers also, including a 20 per cent saving. There is no deadline on the offer – available until sold out. Fares include onboard meals and daily excursions by vehicle or tuk-tuk. The first cruise sails on October 4, 2019.
