Ian Rolfe introduced a major new publication on Norfolk Island last week with the launch of his book ‘Norfolk Island Ian Rolfe Photography’.

For the assembled guests and valued retailers, the warm winter sun spilling into the courtyard at historic No.9 Quality Row in World Heritage listed Kingston,  was appreciated not only for keeping out the cold, but also its quality of light – which has totally captivated Ian and is so evident in his photographs.

Ian, a Master of Photography has had a long relationship with Norfolk Island, regularly leading photography tours and workshops.  Fellow photographer and also artist, adventurer and media presenter Sorrel Wilby officially launched the book. A Norfolk Island local, Sorrel also wrote the book’s Introduction where she says: “If these photographs appear to have been conjured from a dream, then let’s hope we never wake up!” Ian says that he and Sorrel are “soul mates, as our emotional eye sees the island in the same way”.

As a hard cover coffee-table style book the quality of production of this book is evident.  However it is the absolute beauty of Ian’s photos that captivate as the viewer is taken on a journey around the island to appreciate intense seascapes, lush valleys, dramatic sunsets and gentle sunrises. The landscape of the island has rarely been captured as it has through Ian’s lens.  He says: “I absolutely love Norfolk Island, and it’s assuredly my favourite South Pacific destination. I have visited and photographed numerous localities in the Pacific region, so I don’t make this statement lightly. What renders this setting so particular and so beckoning for a landscape photographer, is the islands sublime scenic beauty, the unique majestic Pines and sea cliffs, its colourful greenness and the locals who give this island its distinctive charm”.

The book has been brought to life by Ian with the backing of Rebecca Christian at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre, who brings Ian’s workshop to the Island. The week before the launch of the book, Ian ran his latest ‘Norfolk Island Southern Lightscapes Workshop’. The beauty of these tours is the combination of quality photography teaching, the small size of the group allowing maximum 1:1 tuition time, and Ian’s intimate knowledge of the best spots for following the light around the island. Comments from this group included: “You learn so much with Ian” and “shooting with the professionals, that’s why I’m here”.

‘Norfolk Island Ian Rolfe Photography’ has a recommended retail price of $59. Copies can be purchased from the Norfolk Island Travel Centre and across the island at the Golden Orb, The R.E.O. at Kingston, the Visitors Information Centre and Gallery Guava. It will make an excellent Christmas gift for Island family and those who appreciate fine photography.
