Lessons from the European real estate experience as Australia faces decades of historically low interest rates

A leading real estate expert at the University of Sydney Business School has warned Australian real estate prices could continue to rise unchecked because of historically low interest rates that may not rise significantly for decades.

Associate Professor Jamie Alcock was speaking ahead of a high powered seminar which will focus on European real estate in a low interest rate environment and the implications for Australia.

Guest speaker at the seminar will be Oxford University’s Professor Andrew Baum who is also Chairman of the UK based Property Funds Research and Chair of the Investment Committee for CBRE Global Investment Partners. Professor Baum will be in Sydney as the first Powell Family Foundation Visiting Scholar in Real Estate Finance.

“The real, after-inflation, interest rates in Australia are getting very close to zero,” said Associate Professor Alcock. “In this environment, we clearly have a lot to learn from the European experience.”

The seminar is open to the media.
