“Let’s Talk Business” with Richard Coles IT’S TIME TO UNLEASH YOUR FEARLESS.

“Fearless (noun) the force inside you that gives you the courage to act in the face of self-doubt.”

The Four Minute Mile story – Impossible?

For thousands of years, people believed that it was impossible for a man to run a mile in less than 4 minutes. Many made this generalisation and formed a belief because anybody who attempted it failed.

Doctors reinforced this belief by showing evidence from their study of the human body that it is physically impossible to achieve this feat. It wasn’t just dangerous; it was impossible. You were crazy to even try. Then in 1954, a man called Roger Bannister refused to believe this. He formed a new belief that it was possible.

Sir Roger Bannister was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. After lots of training mentally and physically, he accomplished this supposedly impossible feat. But, what was amazing is that until Roger Bannister accomplished this feat, nobody, for thousands of years, could do it. Yet, within one year of Bannister breaking the record, 37 other runners also did it and in the following year, another 300 did the same. The great New Zealand runner John Walker managed to run 135 sub-four-minute miles during his career.

Why, because Banisters achievement had destroyed peoples limiting beliefs that it was impossible. The experts said it couldn’t be done.

In the 1940’s, the mile record was pushed to 4:01, where it stood for nine years, as runners struggled with the idea that, just maybe, the experts had it right.  Perhaps the human body had reached its limit.

Once Bannister proved that it was possible to run a mile in under four minutes, suddenly everyone could do it – proving an important lesson: once you stop believing something is impossible, it becomes possible.

The breakthrough

On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute barrier, running the distance in 3:59.4.  As part of his training, he relentlessly visualized the achievement to create a sense of certainty in his mind and body.

If you envision it, you can achieve it.

Visualisation is a wonderful tool in business. In fact, any leader needs to show his team where he/she is taking them, how they will go there and when. All top performers, regardless of profession, know the importance of picturing themselves “succeeding in their minds before they actually do in reality.” Imagining positive outcomes does not mean abandoning common sense. The best way to envision success is to see yourself putting in the work to get there.

It is extremely effective when harnessed and used correctly. (I will cover this topic in more details in a future article)

Roger Bannister changed his story. He was just an ordinary boy. There was no reason why he should have gone on to do anything great. He was just a working-class boy who wanted to study medicine.

But Roger decided to change things. He refused to settle.

“Attitude creates reality. How you view a situation can have an enormous impact on how you live. Some people see setbacks as absolute devastation, whereas others view them as opportunities. At the end of the day, the choice is really up to you.”
