Fortunately for travelers a registered travel agency will apply for all necessary permits, eliminating much of the hassle travelers initially anticipate. TibetCtrip Travel Service-TCTS ( has been operating tours of Tibet for over 10 years and explains what travelers need to do to help ensure an easy experience.

  • After booking the tour travelers need to supply TCTS with copies of their Chinese visa and passport, they will be required for the permit application. If these are unavailable at the time of booking be sure to send them at least 3 weeks before the tour start date. TCTS recommends sending passport copies before mailing the passport off with the visa application.
  • Travelers can think of their permit as a kind of Tibet visa; it must be presented when boarding trains or checking into flights. If the travel group is arriving from Mainland China it will be necessary to provide a mailing address for the permits to be sent to, usually this is a hotel. Groups coming from Nepal will have their guide waiting at the border or airport with the permit in hand. Permits cannot be mailed internationally.
  • Small groups, even individuals, can now obtain Tibet permits. Please keep in mind that groups comprised of different nationalities cannot enter on the same permit and certain individuals such as journalists, foreign diplomats, and military members may need special permission to get a permit. TCTS will provide details while helping travelers plan their tour.

At first the details can seem like a lot to keep track of, however obtaining a Tibet travel permit is a relatively simple and straightforward process. Just provide TCTS with copies of each group member’s passport, Chinese visa, and an address for the permit to be sent (if arriving from Mainland China). Remember that travel regulations may change at any time with little to no advanced notice; TCTS will help affected travelers adjust their itineraries. The 2014 travel season is coming up quick, now is the time to start planning a tour!
