June 26, 2013 DESTINATION No Comments Email Email

From 21 June 2013, the city of Newcastle’s historic Watt Street will come to life each evening through an electric, interactive multimedia light display set to transport visitors through time and place.

250x250pxThe landmark contemporary art project – a joint initiative between The City of Newcastle, Newcastle NOW and the University of Newcastle – will see heritage listed buildings, historic townhouses and colonial terraces along Newcastle’s oldest street brought to life through colourful cinematography, lavish light ups and interactive installations.

“Watt Street represents the heart of Newcastle – which is the birthplace not only of the city, but the entire Hunter region,” said Jan Ross, Manager of Tourism and Economic Development Services at The City of Newcastle. “Over the past 200 plus years, Newcastle has experienced significant change. This exciting project enables us to bring this rich history to life, and showcase the city’s evolution in a highly innovative and engaging way,” said Ms Ross.

From sunset until 10pm each evening visitors will be taken on a journey through interactive projections on ten sites around Watt Street – spanning its early roots as a traditional meeting and fishing place for Awabakal and Worimi people, European colonisation in 1804, its establishment as a bustling trading and mining port right up to its transformation into the vibrant dining and entertainment precinct it is today. The general public are being encouraged to become involved in the project through submissions of their own lineages and recollections of the area for inclusion in the display.

“One of the most exciting aspects of the project is involvement from the local community.  What stories do they have to share about Watt Street, its special characters and local legends? Do they have family connections with past residents, or memories of special nights at the iconic Great Northern Hotel, Tattersalls, or Beach Hotel to share? These unknown nuggets of history and still to be seen images from the past will keep the project fresh, authentic and engaging –  and we can’t wait to learn more about the history of this very significant street,”

“The other aspect of this innovative project is the melding of the ideas and technology coming out of the students, technicians and artists from the University of Newcastle. The images, stories and interactive displays will continue to evolve across the twelve month life of the project.”

Following its official launch on 21 June, City Evolutions will run for an initial period of twelve months – with installations being updated on a regular basis. The project will be supported by The City of Newcastle’s ‘Watt’s on Watt’ initiative – including the staging of a series of diverse community events on and around the street throughout the year.

City Evolutions is proudly funded by the Department of Energy, Resources and Tourism under T-QUAL grants, the Office of Environment and Heritage, The City of Newcastle, Newcastle NOW and The University of Newcastle.
