Earth Hour 2014 takes place on March 29th at 8:30 p.m. local time. Created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is the largest movement for the planet in human history, spanning 7,000 cities, 154 countries, with a digital reach of 200 million.

This year’s theme is “Be a superhero for the planet.”  With that in mind, Le Méridien Taipei will activate a range of energy-saving measures during Earth Hour.  Le Meridien Taipei will turn off all exterior lights in observance of Earth Hour, which may include: exterior wall signage lighting, parking site signs, veranda lights, building overhang lights, exterior wall projection lights and garden lights; and using electronic poster system, recyclable letter paper and poster to inform guests about Earth Hour 2014 observances.

“As one of Taipei’s leading hotels, Le Méridien Hotel Taipei is pleased and excited to be joining this worldwide event to underscore the importance of energy conservation and sustainability.  This year’s theme is about being superheros for the planet.  We believe that all of us working together can be superheros by doing our part in showing our concern for this beautiful planet we call Earth.” said Daven Tsai, General manager of Le Meridien Taipei.  “It isn’t just about turning off lights, it’s about all of us coming together to show that we are all committed to saving the planet.  We are working closely with other Starwood hotels to seek ways to decrease energy consumption and our carbon footprint on the planet.”

Starwood’s pioneering Global Citizenship philosophy reflects the same dedication to sustainability among its 171,000 associates worldwide. In 2013, more than 650 hotels participated in Earth Hour in various ways.

This year will mark Starwood’s sixth annual participation in Earth Hour, making it one of the largest worldwide companies to make a pronounced global statement with a voluntary hour of darkness.  Earth Hour is just one of the many ways Starwood acts in support of its 30/20 by 20 goals, which is the company’s commitment to reduce energy consumption by 30% and water consumption by 20% by 2020 across its entire portfolio.
