A cultural celebration for all Australians, the Yalukit Wilum Ngargee (Boon Wurrung language for welcome) is a free Indigenous arts and music festival, marking the opening week of the 2017 St Kilda Festival.

Yalukit Wilum Ngargee will be held on Saturday 4 February 2017, at the culturally significant O’Donnell Gardens in St Kilda. A free community event, this unique, family-friendly festival showcases the Indigenous heritage of the City of Port Phillip, paying respect to the rightful landowners and their culture.

City of Port Phillip Mayor Cr Bernadene Voss said Council is looking forward to the growing arts festival again showcasing the talent of local Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders.

“The City of Port Phillip today proudly announces the return of Yalukit Wilum Ngargee in 2017. We are honoured to once again host this Festival, which highlights and celebrates our Indigenous community, and showcases the talents of some of the best artists Australia-wide. We look forward to celebrating the diverse offering presented by these talented acts, as

part of St Kilda Festival 2017.”

The City of Port Phillip is excited to welcome Gawurra to the stage at Yalukit Wilum Ngargee 2017. Known for his deeply resonant voice and musical sensitivity, Gawurra hails from Arnhem Land and spent time as a child on his grandmother’s land of Yathalamara before moving to Milingimbi Island with his family. The City of Port Phillip looks forward to Gawurra spreading his message of human love and connection through his performance at Yalukit Wilum Ngargee.

An artist who has been guided and shaped by two cultures – Indigenous and Hip Hop – he is the first rapper to tour out of Thursday Island in the Torres Strait area. A lyrical storyteller, Mau Power says: “The only way for me to tell the story of how these cultures entwine and connect is for me to tell my own story”. His performance will feature songs from his new album, The Show Will Go On.
