French Quarter Festivals, Inc. will honor festival friend and musician, Lionel Ferbos, at the 14th annual Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron. Mr. Ferbos passed away on July 17, 2014, two days after his 103rd birthday.

Considered the oldest-performing jazz musician, Mr. Ferbos regularly performed at French Quarter Festival and Satchmo SummerFest. In April 2014, he cancelled his French Quarter Festival appearance due to health issues.

Festival organizers will honor Mr. Ferbos with a photo tribute on both outside stages and the Satchmo Seminars inside the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint. Trumpeter Leroy Jones will pay tribute during his Friday, August 1st set. Bandmates Lars Edegran & the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra will dedicate their Saturday, August 2nd performance to Mr. Ferbos by playing some of his favorite songs.

“Lionel joined the orchestra in 1970. He enjoyed playing intricate ragtime tunes like Scott Joplin’s New Rag, Rose Leaf Rag, The Entertainer… tunes that required good reading skills,” said Edegran. “Some of his favorite vocals were Creole Belles, Kiss Me Sweet, If I Could Be with You, and Beautiful Doll. His trumpet style was perfectly suited for playing ragtime music – he was very accurate at reading the parts but also gave it a certain New Orleans flavor just as he did with his vocals. He will be sorely missed not only as a musician but also as a very good friend.”

On Sunday, August 3rd, the festival will close with a Trumpet Tribute to Louis Armstrong and Lionel Ferbos, led by Kermit Ruffins.

Charbonnet Labat Funeral Home will host a wake for Ferbos on Aug. 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Aug. 2 at Corpus Christi Epiphany Catholic Church.
