Food Connect, Brisbane’s innovative local food pioneer, has earned certification as aB Corporation, as an acknowledgment of the company’s commitment to social and environmental ethics, transparency and accountability. Connect joins over 2000 Certified B Corporations globally — including 9 others in Brisbane — that have met the rigorous standards that measure a company’s impact on its employees, suppliers, community, and the environment.

“For over a decade, our mission has been to transform the food system in South East Queensland,” said Food Connect co-founder Emma-Kate Rose. “That means we’ve always looked for ways to put social and environmental impacts on an equal footing with profitability.  Becoming a Certified B Corporation validates our commitment to our employees and farmers, our local community, and the South East Queensland bioregion.”

Food Connect was established as a social enterprise after co-founder and ex-farmer Robert Pekin was forced off his dairy farm.  The result of Pekin’s vow to create a fairer food industry for all, the organisation is dedicated to forming connections between consumers and those who grow, process and distribute food, ensuring all are recognised and rewarded fairly.

“There’s a lot of talk about supporting local family farms and eating healthy food,” said co-founder Robert Pekin, “but to make that meaningful we have to demonstrate a food system that transparently puts the health of our soils and viability of our growers ahead of rampant profiteering.  And we look forward to assisting other B Corps with their food procurement strategies as a way to give back to the B Corp community.”

Certified B Corporations are committed to using the power of business to solve systemic social and environmental problems. In addition to recognising existing efforts, B Corp Certification also provides companies with a community of like-minded business owners to continually progress and innovate.  With the likes ofPatagoniaStone & Wood and SilverChef, they are keeping good company, redefining success in business, so that one day everyone uses business as a force for good.

“We are thrilled to have Food Connect join the B Corp community. Their certification is testament to the high standards of transparency, accountability and social and environmental performance that the team has maintained while running a successful business. We look forward to their active leadership both in Queensland, Australia and beyond as they continue using their business as a force for good.” – Charlie Syme, Acting Director, B Lab Australia & New Zealand.

Food Connect has long been recognised for social impact leadership, and has been the recipient of a number of environmental awards, including the Banksia Awards and Queensland Government Sustainability Awards.

Food Connect’s mission is founded on four guiding principles:

  • Fair Food: From seed to plate every participant has equality of access and remuneration in the work they do.

  • Share the Risk: Eaters commit to creating a stable market and participate in production decisions.  Farmers take responsibility for growing the very best ecological produce and participate in setting prices.

  • Interdependence: recognising that we all are a part of the one system. Our task here is to incorporate what we know from nature’s systems into our work and relationships.

  • Connection: Authentic connection is the glue that not only sustainably holds society together, but is also the foundation for personal and collective accountability.
