Washington, DC has been named the number two city in the world for travellers in 2020 by world-leading travel authority, Lonely Planet. The city receives the accolade in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2020, the highly anticipated annual collection of the best travel destinations, trends, journeys and experiences to have in the year ahead.

For 15 years, Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel’ has announced the top ten hottest countries, regions, cities and best value destinations for the coming year. Fighting off fierce competition, each destination is chosen for its topicality, unique experiences and ‘wow’ factor. This year there has been huge emphasis on the best sustainable travel experiences for 2020, to ensure travellers have a positive impact wherever they go.

Washington, DC is an exciting choice for travellers in 2020. Home to iconic museums and monuments, beautiful scenery and a thriving food scene as well as being the home of American history and politics, the city is truly a cosmopolitan epicentre.

2020 celebrates key anniversaries, dates and openings in Washington, DC. All eyes will be on the city as it marks the 100th anniversary of 19th amendment, the law that granted woman the right to vote and the exciting 2020 presidential election. What better way to celebrate 100 years since prohibition than by visiting one of DC’s many speakeasies?

The city will also see many new hotels in 2020. A Mob Hotel will open in DC, as the very first American branch of the hotel brand, near the iconic food hub Union Market. Riggs Hotel, the first Lore Collection hotel in North America will also open next year, named after the city’s former Riggs Bank, built in 1891.

This combined with the many other exciting launches, exhibitions and cultural delights Washington, DC has in store for 2020, firmly places the U.S. capital as a must-visit destination.
