egtmedia59An elderly Australian couple and a family from New Zealand escaped uninjured after their helicopter crashed in strong wind on Fiji’s Treasure Island resort.

Tourists watched in horror as the copter slammed down and wrapped itself around a tree. Video of the crash has emerged and can be viewed here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFX5UIGCM1I

New Zealand-based businessman Aaron Toresen, along with his wife and two daughters aged six and nine, were in the copter when it went down, New Zealand media reported. Also in the helicopter were the Aussie couple and, of course, the pilot.

The wrecked Eurocopter on Treasure Island

Toresen told the New Zealand Herald the pilot warned them they could be in for a some gusts of wind when they landed.

They certainly were.

“When we touched down, a big gust knocked the chopper up. The pilot – I don’t know whether he had a choice or not frankly – he went full throttle. He absolutely gunned it,” Toresen told the paper.

The chopper hurtled out of control, slamming into a tree beside the seaside swimming pool.

It was two days before Christmas and everyone emerged from the wreckage unscathed – the best Christmas present of all.

After a medical check to make sure everyone was OK, the Toresens decided to stick with their tropical holiday and the Aussie couple continued their travels around the South Pacific.
