Lucky Number Seven: Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary celebrates the birthday of Murdoch the Grey Nurse Shark

To celebrate the seventh birthday of Murdoch the Grey Nurse Shark, Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary has hosted a special birthday party in his honour.

As a part of the celebration, a Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary diver dressed in birthday-themed clown costume delivered a delicious fish treat to the birthday boy, whose fierce appearance disguises his Labrador-like personality.

Murdoch_Seventh_Birthday_Manly_SEA_LIFE_SanctuaryBorn at Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary, Murdoch’s seventh birthday highlights the success of the sanctuary’s breeding program for Grey Nurse Sharks, who are still struggling to recover from targeted hunting in the 1970’s due to fishing, shark meshing and their very slow reproductive rate.

“Seven years ago we were both proud and excited to have Murdoch born right here at the Sanctuary, and on his birthday every year we celebrate the great success of our Grey Nurse Shark breeding program”, commented Rob Townsend, Life Sciences Manager for Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary.

“Every year we are also getting closer to Murdoch himself reaching maturity and starting to breed, which if successful, will not only contribute to bringing these incredible species back from the brink of extinction, but also in raising awareness of, and support for, conservation endeavours regarding all sharks, particularly at a time when the plight of these apex predators in our Australian waters is at risk due to current culling practises in NSW and across Australia,” added Townsend.

Murdoch is one of the seven Grey Nurse Sharks on display in the over 4 million litre tank complete with an underwater viewing tunnel of sharks, turtles, stingrays and other tropical fish. Visitors to Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary will experience animal conservation in action and take an active part in the sanctuary’s rescue, breed and protect program.

Successfully breeding some of Sydney’s most incredible local species, the sanctuary is passionate about rescue, nursing animals back to health and releasing them back into the wild, and also striving to protect their natural habitats.
