Lufthansa rolls out iPads to its entire cabin crew

June 9, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Lufthansa is providing its 20,000 flight attendants with iPad Minis in a mass rollout that will see the so-called cabin mobile device (CMD) successively issued to the airline’s entire cabin crew over the next few weeks.

The German carrier has had an Electronic Flight Bag in operation in the cockpit since the beginning of 2015, used by 4300 pilots for flight planning and operations. At the same time, cabin crew managers also received a tablet, which has worked well and is now to be extended to include all cabin crew.

The issuing of 20,000 cabin mobile devices is a major step in Lufthansa’s year of digitisation.

A gentle push on the home button and the digital world opens up to the user. A finger swipes the surface and navigates to a yellow app. The Lufthansa crew flight apps make the seating plan quickly visible and provide cabin crew with a plenty of information.

The CMD gives cabin crew members all the data they need to access service manuals and schedules and easily view any changes in plans. The airline says its CMD heralds a new way of “paperless” working and simplifies existing processes to give staff more time for customers. It also significantly improves communication with personnel on board.

The CMD project is part of a current program called “OPSession”, which aims to further digitise the operational areas of Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines. Employees with no fixed workplace are to be equipped with mobile devices so that they may meet the needs of the customer in an better and more personalised way.
