Maalifushi by COMO unveils an unspoilt surfing nirvana

COMO Hotels and Resorts is pleased to announce that Maalifushi by COMO — the group’s private island resort in the Maldives’ southern Thaa Atoll — has partnered with Tropicsurf to offer easy access to some of the world’s most sought-after breaks.

With over 20 years’ experience, Tropicsurf is a respected surf coaching and guiding operation, setting the benchmark in luxury surfing. Its approach takes guests beyond a traditional surf holiday.

Maalifushi surf 1The location of Maalifushi, the only resort on this string of uninhabited islands, sets it apart from other properties: guests simply cannot stay closer to these world-famous surf breaks. The resort now has a resident Tropicsurf guide who will work with guests of all abilities — from lagoon training, where fundamental skills such as balance are taught, through to expert instruction when tackling some of the toughest breaks in the Maldives during the April to October surf season. As part of the surf programme, equipment can be hired and boat transfers to the best spots can be arranged — including to the renowned ‘Farms’ break on the resort’s southwest side.

The principal draw of Maalifushi as a top surfing destination is the absence of other surfers, where you can go toe-to-toe with breaks that are one of the community’s best kept secrets. COMO guests have almost exclusive access with Tropicsurf (other surfers can only reach these waters via liveaboard vessels and private seaplane charters).

Maalifushi surfRoss Phillips, founder of Tropicsurf, explained why surfing in this part of the Maldives is so special: “There are so many different types of breaks, which means there’s something to suit every ability. When the waves get big you can hide and go to smaller spots. And conversely the waves rarely go flat, meaning there’s just about always something nice to ride. It’s consistent. Additionally, the waves are perfectly shaped, offering long rides in a warm tropical environment, making it the ideal location to get some practice in and improve your skills.”

COMO and Tropicsurf’s week-long ‘Learn to Surf’ package, perfect for those looking to experience surfing for the first time, is priced from $6170 per person. The ‘Surf Pro’ package, which also lasts a week and is aimed at more experienced surfers, starts at $7390. Both packages include half-board accommodation at Maalifushi by COMO.

It’s not just surfers who will enjoy a stay on Thaa Atoll. With an abundance of marine life to be seen off the pristine beaches and a PADI dive centre, Maalifushi also attracts keen snorkellers and divers — with a resident marine biologist on-hand to discuss the array of wildlife to see across the house reef. For those seeking a relaxing break, personal wellbeing is catered for at COMO Shambhala Retreat at Maalifushi, where Asian-inspired holistic therapies calm the mind and recharge the body.
