To celebrate Macao’s feats as a City of Gastronomy, the former Portuguese territory’s adorable mascot Mak Mak has taken to the skies, her image painted on the livery of one of Air Macau’s new aircraft.
Air Macau, in co-operation with the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), painted the tourism mascot on ‘Cidade de Macau’, the latest aircraft in the expanding fleet.
Dressed as a chef, Mak Mak is expected to not only encourage visitors from around the world to explore the historic centre of Macao but also promote Macao as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
With 2019 marking the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the People’s Republic of China and 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mak Mak’s flights around Asia are sure to strike a chord with visitors far beyond the region.
MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said this was the first time Mak Mak had appeared on an aircraft to promote Macao tourism.
A creation of Macao local Tou Chon Wai, Mak Mak is a black-faced spoonbill native to Macao, her headwear inspired by the historic Guia Lighthouse, once the highest point of the former Portuguese territory.
In her role of pathfinder, Mak Mak encourages visitors to explore and enjoy as much of Macao as they can.
