Mad Tea Party, Disneyland Park Fun Facts

May 24, 2014 Theme Parks No Comments Email Email

It’s always teatime at Mad Tea Party, the iconic Disneyland Park attraction that takes guests on a twirl inside a giant pastel teacup.

Guests are invited to celebrate their “un-birthday” in this whirlwind of color and music inspired by Walt Disney’s animated film “Alice in Wonderland.” The fun overflows in Fantasyland underneath a kaleidoscope of paper lanterns.

  • Like a scene out of the Mad Hatter party in “Alice in Wonderland,” Mad Tea Party features the same floral colors, wacky architecture and disproportionately sized objects as seen in the movie.
  • Each teacup holds up to five guests. As the “party” begins, the cups spin atop three separate turntables, which are mounted on one larger turntable.
  • Guests control the direction and speed of their own teacup using the wheel in the center of the vehicle. The faster they spin the wheel, the faster the cup twirls. For a gentler ride, guests may choose to not turn the wheel.
  • Mad Tea Party was an opening day attraction at Disneyland on July 17, 1955. The attraction was moved during the renovation of Fantasyland and it reopened in 1983.
  • The volume of a Mad Tea Party teacup “ride vehicle” is approximately 37,500 cubic inches. It would take an estimated 3,000 cups of tea to fill just one of these oversized teacups.
  • A Mad Tea Party “ride vehicle” was on display in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in 2005 as a popular culture icon. The exhibit was part of the Disneyland Resort and Disney Parks’ 50th anniversary celebration.
  • Today, an iteration of the attraction exists at every Disney park around the world:
    • Mad Tea Party at Walt Disney World
    • Alice’s Tea Party at Tokyo Disneyland
    • Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups at Disneyland Paris
    • Mad Hatter Tea Cups at Hong Kong Disneyland
