Magnificent Marvellous Melbourne

Melbourne, the world’s most liveable city, has again reinforced that it is centre stage for major international events
The Victoria Tourism Industry Council is thrilled by the impressive array of major sporting events and blockbuster musicals won by Melbourne and announced this week by the Victorian Government.

Melbourne has secured an exclusive series between the USA Dream Team and the Australian Boomers at the iconic Etihad Stadium in August 2019; a new exhibition and world debut of the Real Madrid World of Football Experience in June 2018; and the Tony Award winning musical, Come From Away, will stage its production for the first time outside North America in Melbourne in July 2019.

Victoria Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Felicia Mariani said the flurry of major sporting, cultural and musical theatre announcements this week against the backdrop of the Australian Grand Prix and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, further cements our position as the unrivalled events capital of Australia.

“This weekend almost one million people will visit the wonderful events Melbourne has to offer, including the start of the AFL season, the Formula 1 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix, numerous theatrical productions across the city, the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show,” she said.

Late last year, Melbourne was also selected as the only Australian city, and third global city behind London and New York, to host the world-renowned theatrical production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

“The Harry Potter phenomenon has an unparalleled global following and Melbourne will be the only city in the Southern Hemisphere where fans can enjoy this production.

“There is no question that this spectacle will attract visitors from overseas and across Australia. Given the two-part nature of the production, it requires a second overnight stay, meaning more visitor spend injected into the Victorian economy,” Ms Mariani said.

“We look forward to Victoria continuing to secure these blockbuster events and Melbourne maintaining its crown as Australia’s events capital.”
