Announced at IMEX Frankfurt today, Asia Pacific’s newest world-class convention centre is now 50% complete and on track for opening in October 2020.

With only 16 months until opening the doors for Te Pae Christchurch’s first event, venue operator, AEG Ogden is thrilled with the interest levels from international convention decision makers.

“The building is now 50% compete with all structural steel elements in place and the roofing and façade being applied and the 1,400 seat auditorium is taking shape.  You can really see the scale and the beauty of the spaces, particularly the wonderful ballroom with views over the Avon River and surrounding parklands,” said Ross Steele, Te Pae General Manager.

Te Pae is the catalyst in the regeneration of Christchurch, which is known as the ‘Garden City’.  It was the New Zealand Government’s vision with the city to create a dynamic entertainment precinct along the banks of the Avon River with a world-class convention centre as the centre piece for economic growth and community prosperity.

“For an historic city such as Christchurch, it is rare opportunity for a convention centre to be the focal point of a city’s urban redevelopment. With Te Pae’s spectacular city centre location and easy walking distance to 2,500 hotel rooms backed by supporting meetings industry infrastructure, it is not surprising Christchurch and Te Pae are capturing global attention,” Mr Steele said.

With Te Pae’s opening on track, the business development team has secured international and national conventions and events including;

  • 2020 INTECOL’s 11th International Wetlands Conference, 1,000 delegates
  • 2021 Congress of the Federation of Asian & Oceanian Biochemists & Molecular Biochemists (FAOBMB),1,000 delegates
  •  2021 International Congress on Biological Invasions (ICBI 2021), 800 delegates
  • 2021 International Education Conference, 700 delegates
  • 2021 Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Annual Conference, 700 delegates

Christchurch is the gateway to New Zealand’s South Island, known for its breathtaking beauty and pristine natural environment, it is only fitting the largest, most influential international conference in the field of wetland science and its applications has chosen Christchurch to host the INTECOL 11th International Wetlands Conference, Te Pae’s first International Convention.
