Malaysia Airlines has chosen a highly experienced airline executive, who has worked for the airline before, to head up its operations in Australia and New Zealand.

The airline has officially announced the return of Giles Gilbert as regional manager for Australia and New Zealand.

Gilbert has 25 years of experience in senior executive management positions in airlines, spanning three continents and six different airlines – 15 of those years spent previously at Malaysia Airlines. The airline said yesterday Gilbert  would bring a wealth of knowledge to his role, along with a fresh innovative approach to managing all aspects of regional operations.

Gilbert would focus on profitable revenue generation in his new role, the airline said.

Gilbert said he was “tremendously excited to be back at Malaysia Airlines” and looked forward to leading the company in the Australasian market in the years ahead.

“We’ve already announced growth plans for Australia this year, along with increased frequency and additional routes that will connect the Australian and New Zealand market

with South East Asia and the rest of the world exceptionally well,” he said.

Gilbert will be based in Melbourne and will liaise closely with trade throughout the Australasian region. The aim will be to strengthen and build relationships, and make Malaysia Airlines more accessible to trade partners.

“It’s an absolute pleasure to lead the Airline into what is going to be a very challenging and exciting period, and we hope to see MH’s recent success continue strongly,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert was previously country manager for Royal Brunei Airlines and before that was area manager Victoria and Tasmania with Malaysia Airlines.
