Malaysia has a packed calendar of events in store this September

Aussies looking for a late winter escape should head to Malaysia this September to take in the plethora of exciting sporting and cultural events the destination has to offer. From aquatic activities to festival fever, September 2013 has a lot in store.
On the water with the Sarawak Regatta 
Date: 6 – 8 September 2013
Location: Kuching Waterfront, Kuching, Sarawak

Since 1872 the Sarawak Regatta has been a highlight of Malaysia’s event calendar and this year Aussies can head to Kuching to cheer on 44 boats participating in the national races and five international racing events. The main highlight of the event is the Dragon Boat Race, which involves participants from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Aside from boat races, attractions such as the “Brooke Swim”, kayaking and duck catching competitions will keep visitors entertained.  www.sarawakregatta.com

The angling event where only Marlin and Sailfish count
Date: 13 – 15 September 2013
Location: Pantai Lanjut, Rompin, Pahang

Participants in the Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge 2013 can only gain points catching Marlin and Sailfish in this annual off-shore catch and release fishing competition. Angling enthusiasts, from as far as the United States, United Kingdom and Japan, travel to Pahang in September to participate in this adventurous and eco-friendly sporting event, which coincides with the active migration of Marlin and Starfish passing through to Australia.

Take to the skies in the Kokol International Paragliding Race 2013 
Date: 16 – 18 September 2013
Location: Kampung Kokol, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

The Kokol International Paragliding Race, organised by the Kinabalu Paragliding Club, attracts local and foreign pilots alike from as far as Russia, Poland and Switzerland every year.  Enjoy the show as paragliders soar through the skies taking in the beautiful natural landscape of Mt Kinabalu and the panoramic view of the coastal area in Sabah. www.sabahtourism.com

1Malaysia Lantern Tourism Festival 2013
Date: 19 September 2013
Venue: Central Market, Kuala Lumpur

The Central Market of Kuala Lumpur will be lined and lit with thousands of colourful lanterns this September to celebrate the 1Malaysia Lantern Tourism Festival 2013. Also known as the Mid-Autumn or Mooncake Festival, highlights of the Lantern Festival includes the lantern procession, acrobatic performances and festive treats such as mooncakes and baby yams. www.motac.gov.my

Tennis fever at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur
Date: 21 – 29 September 2013
Venue: Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur

The 2013 ATP World Tour’s Asian heat swings into play in Southeast Asia at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur. This event will see the world’s best men’s tennis players battle it out for the title.  Other than world-class tennis action, highlights of the event include the signature catch-the-ball promotions with prizes, the on-court coin toss and also daily autograph sessions with the players. www.malaysianopentennis.com

Labuan Arts Festival 2013 
Date: 27 – 29 September 2013
Venue: Labuan International Seasport Complex

Art enthusiasts should head to Malaysia’s Labuan Island off the coast of Sabah this September to experience the Labuan Arts Festival 2013. Visitors will be entertained with stage shows by local artists, cultural dances and a handicraft exhibition promoting the unique local cultures of the region. Highlights of the festival include the Top Spinning Tournament (gasing pangkah), Graffiti Spray Art Competition and Pearl of Labuan Busking Competition.
