While London and New York might be renowned as shopping meccas, savvy Australian travellers are getting their retail therapy fix closer to home and heading to budget-friendly Malaysia, according to leading travel and lifestyle site

image002With flights to Kuala Lumpur from Sydney currently starting at $833 return[i] compared to New York at $1684 return and London at $1474 return, travellers seeking a shopping hot-spot without the long haul flight are benefitting from extra dollars left in their spending kitty.

And they’re not settling for second best: Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur incorporates the ideal blend of high-end, designer brands, bargain-filled flea markets and home-grown fashion.

While good deals can be found all year round, smart shoppers time their trip to coincide with one of the two major shopping events: the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (June to August) and the Malaysia Year End Sale (November to January) and reap the rewards with lust-worthy brands such as Armani, Gucci and Fendi all up for grabs for a steal.

“The shopping carnivals are a reason in themselves to visit Malaysia. Over this busy period, retailers outdo each other’s already crazy prices and often offer fabulous gifts with purchases, so the committed shopper will be in holiday heaven. Travelling with a spare or empty suitcase is an absolute must,” said General Manager Kirsty La Bruniy.’s top tips for a bargain-tastic trip to Kuala Lumpur

1.    Grab the girls: KL is the place for a girl’s getaway. Cut your accommodation costs by booking a two or three bedroom suite or apartment. Central accommodation options like Traders Hotel and The Westin are great hotel options.

2.    Keep your eyes peeled for sale airfares: Sign up to travel newsletters and follow brands on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ so you’re first in the know when new fares to Malaysia are launched. Then snap them up before everyone else does!

3.    Don’t be afraid to barter: At markets, bartering is the name of the game. The trick is to be fair and respectful. Everyone wins. Hot tip for KL bargaining: “Mahal” means expensive but combined with “lah” and said with a smile it’s a great start to bargaining at the markets.

4.    Take an empty suitcase: Seriously. Nothing kills a holiday halo faster than excess baggage charges. Pack a few essentials in your carry-on then have fun filling your suitcase with goodies at the other end.

5.    Pace yourself: Most Malaysian shopping centres are open from 10am to 10pm so if *shudder* you feel a little shopped out, have a power-nap at your hotel or a cocktail at one of the many rooftop bars, then hit the shops for your bargain fix again.’s top spots for shopping up a storm in KL
