From 2017 The popular island of Langkawi will be even closer to the mainland – and even more accessible to holiday makers, when Malaysia’s first high-speed ferry service starts operating from Kuala Kedah ferry terminal to Langkawi from July next year.
The double-decker ferry service will be operated by Sani United Bhd (SUB) through its subsidiary, Sani Ferry Sdn Bhd, and is expected to cut travel time by almost 50 per cent.
“It now takes about two hours one-way for a conventional ferry to reach Langkawi from Kuala Kedah terminal, but our high-speed ferry is expected to cut travel time to just under an hour,” said SUB founder Datuk Wan Mohd Sani Salleh.
Ferries link Langkawi to the neighbouring island of Penang and to Kuala Perlis on the mainland. Last year ferry services carried almost two million passengers, with ferry passenger traffic representing over 57% of Langkawi’s 3.6M visitors.
Sani Ferry Sdn Bhd will initially operate two high-speed ferries between Kuala Kedah terminal and Langkawi, and vice versa. Each ferry has a seating capacity for 450 passengers, including 50 business seats in the upper deck.
