LUXE by EXO, the boutique luxury brand of EXO Travel, treats guests to a rare glimpse of a little-known Borneo wonder with an aerial tour of remote Maliau Basin, often referred to as Sabah’s Lost World.
A lush conservation area almost the size of Singapore, Maliau Basin is believed to be as biodiverse as the Amazon. Its relative inaccessibility, walled off by a circumference of sheer, forest-carpeted mountains, deep in the jungles of Sabah State, means much of the basin remains unexplored.
The half-day Aerial Tour of Maliau Basin gives guests a privileged view of this hidden ‘Garden of Eden’. Departing from Kota Kinabalu, a luxury helicopter flight soars above vast, verdant forest, providing a bird’s-eye view of the snaking Kinabatangan River along the way.
The 3.5-hour round-trip flight gives guests unrivalled panoramas over Sabah’s wildest backcountry. The old crater rim that forms the basin’s walls can easily be seen as the helicopter sweeps closer for a view of ancient dipterocarp trees wreathed in the morning’s mists. Twelve different forest types flourish within the crater, a fertile catchment area out of which flows the Maliau River.
