The Malta Tourism Authority is delighted to announce that the beautiful city of Valletta has been voted one of the top cities in the world to visit next year by Lonely Planet, one of the world’s leading travel authorities.

Lonely Planet today released its Top 10 cities in their annual publication, Best in Travel 2015, and Malta’s capital Valletta took 5th place, making it the top island city in the world. The beautiful fortified city of Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with grand examples of architecture and history, and of course the vibrancy of a multicultural city.

From rich military history and baroque cathedrals through to cutting edge architecture, including Renzo Piano’s involvement with the city’s regeneration, Valletta is a striking contrast of past, present and future working in harmony together. Perched above the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, the city’s cobbled streets and sun dappled squares are steeped in history and culture, and buzzing with a vibrant café culture, top class restaurants and fantastic shopping. Valletta has also been awarded the accolade of European Capital City of Culture 2018 and will this year commemorate 450 years since the Great Siege, with remembrance particularly strong on 8 September, Victory Day. Less than three hours flight from no less than 18 airports out of the UK, Valletta is just 20 minutes from Malta’s International Airport, making it an ideal destination for both short weekend breaks as well as extended holidays.

The captivating Maltese Islands are steeped in 7,000 years of rich history and culture with shimmering clear azure waters, stunning natural beauty and year round sunshine. Alex Incorvaja, UK & Ireland Director of the Malta Tourism Authority said: “I am delighted that Valletta has been chosen as one of the top cities in the world in this highly influential publication. The mesmerising city of Valletta offers a mix of history, culture and the Mediterranean sea, enticing travellers back year after year, and will continue to attract prospective travellers in the seasons to come.” For more information on Malta go to www.visitmalta.com
