Mama Takes Over Vin Santo’s with New Music Contest

One of the Southern Highland’s best known restaurants, Vin Santo’s in Mittagong, has been renamed Mama Santo and to celebrate the rebrand, the Italian trattoria will launch a new music contest on Tuesday, July 9, to find the best entertainer in the Highlands.

The owner of the new-look Mama Santo, Moira Mevissen, who bought the popular restaurant three years ago, said the new name, complete with new livery, was designed to reflect the appealing qualities diners could expect from an Italian mama.

“The iconic Italian mama offers warmth, passion, friendliness, big smiles and big hugs – as well as authentic, hearty cooking – and that’s what we deliver in plate loads at Mama Santo,” said Mrs Mevissen as Mama’s alter ego. “We want a night at Mama Santo’s to feel like a big, warm hug, especially during a Highlands winter. In fact, some of our regular guests who become friends receive a real hug when they visit. We want our guests to enjoy personal, heartfelt service, alluring music and hearty cuisine in a warm and relaxing environment where people can laugh, talk and celebrate with friends and family. And yes I know guests are going to start calling me Mama, despite my Dutch background, but I consider that a compliment – all good. I think we could all do with an Italian mama in our lives sometimes!”

Ms Mevissen said the new, two-month ‘Musica dei Notte’ (Italian for ‘night of music’) competition starting on Tuesday, July 9 and continuing every Tuesday night until the ‘Gran Finale’ on September 10, 2013, would showcase local talent, with singers and musicians entertaining diners who will vote for their favourite act. The winner each night will progress towards the final and the $1000 grand prize.

“It’s Highlands Idol, Southern Highlands’ Got Talent and Mamavision all rolled into one,” Mrs Mevissen, or ‘Mama’, said. “We held our first Musica dei Notte contest in 2011 and it proved a great success so we invite singers and musicians to share their gifts with us and we hope their friends and family and as many locals as possible join us as we celebrate the extraordinary talent we have here in the Highlands. We’ve designed our music nights to be affordable and lots of fun with ‘Mama’ adding her voice to the event as well!”

While guests enjoy the music every Tuesday night from July 9, they will also feast on a delicious four-course menu for just $29 per person, or $15 for children, including free garlic bread and a salad, if booked in advance. Drinks on Tuesday nights will be only $5 including premium beer, wine and Mama’s special Keglevich Italian fruit vodka.

Bookings for Musica de Notte nights are required on 4872 4300. Visit www.mamasanto.com.au or get contest and restaurant updates on Mama Santo’s Facebook page at www.fcebook.com/vinsantopizzeria.

Singers and musicians keen to enter the competition should call Antony Shingler at Mama Santo’s on 0404 076 360. Places are quickly filling and there are prizes up for grabs each night.
