Mamamia founder to share secrets of web success

The secrets to creating a vibrant online community – and successfully connecting with women – will be revealed to Travellers Choice members in November when one of Australia’s most successful website publishers addresses the national network’s Annual Shareholders’ Conference.
A former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Dolly magazines, Mia Freedman launched Mamamia (www.mamamia.com.au) as a personal blog. Today the website reaches 1.6 million Australian women each month, and has grown 600% in the past year.

Freedman will explain how she morphed a modest blog into a multi-media juggernaut, provide “tips, tricks and anecdotes” on how travel agents can build an online audience, and highlight the need for retailers to embrace social media.

Drawing on more than 20 years working in all forms of media, she will also share her insights into the 10 ways businesses regularly “fail” when attempting to connect with women.

Social media will not only loom large in Freedman’s presentation but at the Annual Shareholders’ Conference itself, with Twitter and Facebook being used for the first time to provide delegates with information on events and speakers, and to encourage feedback and discussion.

The integration of social media into this year’s Conference is being led by Digital Marketing Coordinator Lucy Zupan, who says the aim is to generate a two-way conversation with members before, during and after the Hobart event (29 November – 1 December).

“Using Twitter, for instance, we will be able to respond to enquiries, engage with delegates, highlight interesting quotes during presentations and connect with members unable to attend,” says Zupan.

During and after the Annual Shareholders’ Conference, members will also be encouraged to use social networks such as Facebook and Flickr to view and share photos, videos and copies of presentations.
