A 33-year-old man is due to appear in Dunedin District Court in New Zealand today charged with raping a woman aboard the cruise ship Noordam while the vessel was docked in Port Chalmers, the city’s port.

Detectives in New Zealand said the incident allegedly happened on Wednesday.

Officers interviewed the people involved. The complainant and the suspect were known to each other, a detective told Fairfax in New Zealand.

Holland America Line was reported to have confirmed that the victim was a female crewmember and the incident had not involved any passengers.

The Otago Daily Times reported that the suspect had been remanded in custody on Wednesday to appear in court today on charges of sexually violating a woman by rape and by unlawful sexual connection.

The maximum sentence theoretically is 40 years imprisonment, each charge carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years.

Noordam left Port Chalmers at 6pm Wednesday evening and was docked in Fiordland National Park yesterday afternoon.
