A young Belgian backpacker in Australia who posted an advertisement on the Gumtree internet buy-and-sell website, asking for work in Victoria, ended up being rescued by police in South Australia. They have charged a man over her detention and sexual assault.

The young woman put the following message on the Gumtree website: “I’m looking for these jobs in Melbourne starting 30 of January. With accommodation stay or hostel nearby. Cuz I don’t have a car. I love nature and animals, I eat fruit every day;) it would be nice to do a job like this. If you have something please let me know. Thx.”

The woman ended up meeting somebody following her advertisement and was allegedly held captive.

She managed to get a desperate message to her family in Europe and to a friend in Queensland. Both alerted police.

After a tip-off from a member of the public, the missing tourist was found at a property in Murray Bridge South Australia.

A 52-year-old man has been charged over the backpacker’s alleged sexual assault, and with illegally detaining her on a property east of Adelaide.

MEANWHILE, in an entirely separate case, quick-thinking late-night beachgoers tackled and held a man allegedly intent on raping a young female British tourist at Main Beach, Byron Bay, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Echo Netdaily, which covers the Byron Bay region in northern New South Wales, quoted police as saying people on the beach at about 2am on Sunday performed a citizens’ arrest of a man aged in his 40s after an attempted sexual assault on a 27-year-old female British tourist. They held the man at the beach until police arrived.

Detectives charged the man with attempted sexual assault and he was refused bail to appear before the Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday.
