A man wearing only his underpants, with police in hot pursuit, has scaled an airport security fence and crashed a truck into an aircraft preparing for take-off, hurting several crew.
The man, named as Dealario Koonce, was reported to have stripped to his boxer shorts before jumping the perimeter security fence at Eppley Airfield outside Omaha, Nebraska.
Photos showed a screaming man being restrained by several police officers. The suspect was trussed in what appeared to be a straitjacket, the garment customarily used to confine the arms of violently insane persons.
The airport said two crew members and one passenger on the plane had suffered minor injuries from the impact of the truck. The flight, due to take-off for Denver, was delayed and the aircraft taken out of service for inspection, CNN reported.
Police saw Koonce “acting irrationally” but he ran away before they could catch him. He is then said to have hidden in shrubbery and somehow managed to scale a 2.5-metre fence topped with six strands of barbed wire. Once airside, he allegedly found an unattended airport pickup truck and drove it to the apron where the plane was loading passengers.
The suspect was taken to hospital for evaluation and was reported to have tested positive for methamphetamines (‘ice’) a police spokesman said.
Koonce has been charged with two felonies.
