A man running late for his flight decided to delay its take-off by phoning in a hoax bomb threat.
The flight was delayed and the man, a Norwegian aged 30, now faces a longer delay – up to 15 years in prison and a USD 500,000 fine for the stunt.
Police said the man and his travelling companion were at risk of missing their British Airways flight to London, so the man decided to try something extreme to catch the flight.
A general threat about a bomb at the baggage claim was allegedly called in to Philadelphia International Airport in the afternoon. It was followed about 30 minutes later by a call demanding that all British Airways flights (specifically) be grounded.
That gave investigators a clue, and the clincher came soon after. Investigators checked surveillance footage, discovered that the man was making the calls from a pay phone inside the airport, and arrested the suspect without incident, the paper said.
