The seas have lost their radiance for one cruising couple – a man has been charged in Hobart with attempting to murder his partner by allegedly trying to throw her overboard into the Tasman Sea after an argument.

The incident allegedly happened on Radiance of the Seas while the Royal Caribbean cruise ship was on its way to Hobart during a cruise.

A 46-year-old Queensland man, identified in court as David James Fysh, was arrested when the ship docked in Hobart.

Fysh denied trying to kill his partner, pleading not guilty to her attempted murder. Bail was refused and Fysh will now spend the next four months in a Tasmanian jail before appearing in the Supreme Court, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.

Fysh and his partner headed to Sydney from their home in Wamuran, 60 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, to board the Radiance of the Seas.

Police allege Fysh approached his partner from behind on a balcony and grabbed her under the arms in an attempt to throw her overboard while the ship was moving, following an altercation at 3.30am on Thursday, the Hobart Mercury reported.

Passengers told the newspaper they had heard an emergency alarm and screaming in the early hours of Thursday.

Police, who were called to the ship at 8.30am when it docked in Hobart, described the incident as family violence, ABC News said.

Royal Caribbean said its security staff responded to the incident and police attended once the ship docked.

In an issued statement, the line said that it was cooperating fully with authorities. It stressed its zero-tolerance policy towards violence, reiterating that its priority is the safety and security of guests and crew.

As for Radiance of the Seas, it has struck a new note, sailing yesterday from Sydney carrying The Romantics, a Detroit band, part of the 2018 Rock Your Boat music festival at sea. The sellout Rock Your Boat cruise to Noumea and Isle of Pines also stars Australian musicians and artists including Russell Morris and Ross Wilson.
